Introducing OPSM’s Newest Collegiate Advisor: Jenna Croteau

The journey to collegiate soccer looks different for every athlete, but having the right guidance can make all the difference. OPSM’s collegiate advisors support players by combining firsthand experience with a strong understanding of the recruiting landscape. Having gone through the process themselves, they know what it takes to prepare, connect with programs, and find the right fit both on and off the field.

In this feature, we introduce Jenna Croteau, one of OPSM’s newest collegiate recruitment advisors. After playing four years at Campbellsville University and continuing her career professionally in Germany, Jenna now brings her experience, leadership, and passion for the game to help guide athletes through their own recruitment journeys.

What inspired you to become a collegiate advisor?

I really want to give back to the soccer community, it’s given me a lot so being able to help the next generation of players find their own individual paths is something important to me. It was very helpful working with people that have connections to these programs when I was looking at colleges so I’m hoping to be that connection for these players now. Having also started coaching, I think gives me a unique advantage in reading players, providing feedback and sharing my experience on what helps in the recruiting process.

What is your history in collegiate sports and/or at the professional level?

I played my 4 years at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. It is a NAIA institution and I was fortunate enough to be captain my Junior and Senior year as well as be able to help win our conference championship in my Senior year for the first time in the school’s history. After that I went overseas and played in Germany for 2.5 years where we won the Saarland Pokal (state championship) 2 years in a row and won entry into the DFB Pokal (national tournament).

What was your recruiting journey as a player like?

It was a challenge, through my last two years in high school I reached out to a lot of schools and went to a lot of showcases but there were very few who answered or showed any interest. From when I was even younger I was training with OPSM and ultimately with their help I was able to go play in the states which was my dream. There were a lot of doubts along the way and I signed to my University later than usual but I was very happy with where I ended up so it’s important to keep your options open, never give up and put the extra effort in!

What is your process when trying to find a school that fits an athlete?

First I need to learn about the player, what are their strengths on and off the field, what are some of the schools they’re interested in and also making sure they have a highlight video representing their qualities. Then we can start looking at schools and reaching out. Considering factors like the University’s location, size, programs and support are some important things to consider on top of the soccer side. Such as, what is the roster size, what conference do they play in, who is the coach and what is their experience, how many freshmen or seniors do they have, what positions are they recruiting etc.

What does a day in the life of a collegiate advisor look like?

For me it looks like reaching out to coaches about players and making sure their profiles are complete and up to date. Following up on previous communications and making sure the athlete knows their next steps. It involves a lot of communication and supporting the athletes through this process so they understand the process and can enjoy trying to achieve their goals.

What is one moment of your career that you are proud of?

Signing my first professional contract overseas was a really proud moment for me as that was one of my dream goals. Another moment I’m proud of is fighting through long term injury and setbacks, my love for this game keeps pushing me through all the highs and lows.
